The Making of an Ice Cream Destination

Big Spoon Creamery in Birmingham, Alabama was born with a mere $500 and a dream.

And just like that, Chefs Ryan and Geri-Martha O’Hara left their jobs at acclaimed Southern restaurants to start an ice cream business inspired by their love of the cold treat, yes. But even more so, their love of serving others well.

We’ve been following their growing fandom since the beginning via the wonders of the Internet, so recently we visited their brand new brick and mortar location to taste the ice cream frenzy for ourselves. And we weren’t disappointed.

From Trike to Storefront

In 2014, the O’Hara’s began with an ice cream trike and served their creamy artisan creations wherever they could. In less than two years, they upgraded to a food truck. And in April of 2017, they opened a storefront in the Avondale neighborhood of Birmingham where they serve their artisan ice creams, sundaes, splits, milkshakes and sammies!

Local Sourcing is Key

The O’Haras take pride in supporting local farmers and artisans who provide them the ingredients that allow them to be innovative with seasonal, local ingredients. After my own recent visit, my review is summed up like this: the creamiest ice cream with REAL incredible flavor combinations. Ever.

The Taste Test

Fresh ripe peaches, at the tail end of peach season (sigh), paired with tart buttermilk and a hint of vanilla was, to me, summertime in the South on a spoon. I sat and savored every morsel of my scoop. It was a memorable farewell to a short season.

Their peanut butter and caramel flavor called out to me in a nostalgic way. The creamy texture with rich peanut butter folded in plus crunchy peanuts and caramel drizzled on top did not disappoint.

My teenagers were elated to find Fruity Pebble Ice Cream Sammies on the menu, which we watched them make through the kitchen window. They did agree that the smooth vanilla ice cream that was sandwiched between these two fun, fruity and crispy layers could stand on its own any day of the week.

Must-Stop Detour… or Destination?

This ice creamery is gold. My prediction is that folks will increasingly travel from all over to discover this hot spot. They will be the must-stop detour on any Southern road trip. The service comes with big friendly smiles, and the whole family will enjoy it!
